Starry night over Rancho de San Sebastian in Santa Fe, New Mexico (8 pk)

$24.00

Fremont F. Ellis (1897-1985), a Southwestern painter, lived on the 600-acre San Sebastian Land Grant he obtained from the Albuquerque National Bank in trade for six paintings. The mountain property included Ellis’ ranch home, La Hacienda San Sebastian, and his studio. Ellis is known for forming Santa Fe’s first organized artist group, Los Cinco Pintores (The Five Painters) in 1921, with Jozef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Will Schuster, and Willard Nash.

The group lived together in houses on Camino del Monte Sol but disbanded in 1926. In 1940, the Ellis family moved into their hacienda on what became known as San Sebastian Ranch. Other artists followed including Harper Henry, Helmuth Naumer, Tom Lea, Max McGuire, and Pansy Stockton, who purchased land from Ellis to build homes and art studios.
